Biomassa omvat alle plantaardig of dierlijk materiaal, of materiaal van plantaardige of dierlijke herkomst. Biomassa kan dus afkomstig zijn uit gewassen, bomen en planten, algen en dierlijke producten, bijvoorbeeld hout, maïs, mest, algen, zeewier of voedselresten.
Biomassa wordt gebruikt als grondstof voor producten, zoals bouwmateriaal maar ook in kleding, meubels en papier. Wanneer er niets anders meer van gemaakt kan worden, kan het ook worden ingezet voor energie, zoals voor stadsverwarming, bij de industrie en als biogas of biobrandstof voor ons dagelijks gebruik.
