The world cannot survive without biodiversity. For example, species and ecosystems ensure the production of oxygen, decomposition of dead animals and plants, pollination of plants (including agricultural crops), water purification and the control of pests. For humans, biodiversity means food, building materials, fuel (wood) and raw materials for clothing (such as cotton) and medicines. We call these ecosystem services.

Maintaining biodiversity is therefore very important when using bio-raw materials. The Dutch government has taken additional measures in determining the sustainability criteria.
