Particulate matter is a form of air pollution and consists of floating particles smaller than 10 micrometers. These particles are of different size, origin and chemical composition.

It is not good for your health. Some of the particulate matter comes from natural sources such as wind-blown dust and sea salt. But most particulate matter (often about 75-80%) is released into the air because of what people do. For example, particulate matter is produced during combustion processes in industry and traffic and during the handling of bulk goods. It is also released during livestock farming and agriculture and through wood burning and tobacco smoking.
