CO2 is a gas that is naturally present in the air, but the amount of which has increased significantly over the past 150 years. Especially when fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are burned, a lot of CO2 is produced.

CO2 emissions are harmful to the environment. CO2 is the best known and most abundant greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases trap the Earth's heat, causing the Earth to warm. Global warming is leading to the melting of ice at the North and South Poles. Water levels will rise, climates will change and weather will become more extreme. These are all consequences of CO2 emissions. That is why CO2 reduction is very important.

Bioenergy is called 'green' energy because the source is in principle renewable: biomass (unlike fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas) does not run out, it can grow again. During this growth, carbon dioxide (CO2) is removed from the air: plants store carbon in their tissues and make oxygen.

It is even better to capture the CO2 in products (including construction), so that it is captured over an even longer period.
