Energy transition is the transition to a situation in which the energy supply is structurally different in nature and form than the current energy system. In this new system, fossil fuels have largely been replaced by sustainable energy sources, a lot of attention is paid to energy saving and energy storage, and the energy supply is organized more decentrally. The policy goal associated with this transition has been set by the international community in the Paris Climate Agreement: keeping the increase in global average temperatures to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
