Bioenergy and CCS: Two minuses equals a plus?

Recently, Minister Hermans (KGG) responded to questions from the PvdD that negative emissions 'form an important part of the policy mix to be climate neutral in 2050'. The principles of the 'Roadmap Carbon Removal' that is being developed for this purpose, will be presented in the Climate Plan on 24 October. It seems that this Cabinet is working on the advice of the Scientific Climate Council to implement an active policy for the removal of carbon dioxide.

Climate Council report sheds new light on biogenic CO₂

On July 10, the Scientific Climate Council (WKR) published its advice 'Clearing the air?'. The core of the report is that the Netherlands and Europe should not only focus on CO₂ reduction, but also on carbon removal. Biogenic CO₂ is mentioned as one of the techniques to achieve this. Deputy WKR director Heleen de Coninck said about it on BNN VARA: "That can be done, for example, by using biomass, and the CO₂ emissions from that consumption are then captured and stored deep underground". Several media picked up that message. On EénVandaag, viewers were explained how storage of short-cycle biogenic CO₂ contributes to combating climate change. With pictures!

GIDARA Energy announces next advanced methanol facility in the Port of Rotterdam

GIDARA Energy and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are pleased to announce GIDARA's next advanced biofuel facility in the Netherlands: Advanced Methanol Rotterdam (“AMR”). The plant, located in the port of Rotterdam, will convert non-recyclable waste into advanced methanol. The advanced methanol achieves CO 2 emission reductions as described in the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) and…

IEA calls for a quicker cessation of coal to achieve climate goals

Countries must stop using coal more quickly, otherwise climate goals will not be achieved. That is the conclusion of the international energy agency IEA on Tuesday. Reducing global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to net zero by 2050 is necessary to limit the long-term increase in global average temperatures to 1,5°C...

Waste processor is working on a soil improver from residual material

Waste processor Waterstromen wants to use the residual material from its biological industrial residuals processing (BIR) in Lichtenvoorde as a sustainable, organic soil improver. A new method is now being used to reduce the nitrogen content in the material. There is a great need for such a soil improver from the Achterhoek and German agricultural sectors, says the Biomass Foundation, project partner of Waterstromen. Currently…

Giant climate package from Timmermans: from charging stations to CO2 price

The European Union wants to become climate neutral. This remained just nice words for a long time, but it will become a lot more concrete with the climate package that the European Commission is presenting on Wednesday. Twelve special laws must ensure that European greenhouse gas emissions are at least 2030 percent below 55 levels by 1990. Giving away free emission allowances for…
