Dutch green gas production increased by 17 percent in the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The Green Gas Platform announced this on August 24, based on injection figures for the first half of the year. In absolute terms, the increase amounts to an additional 28 million cubic meters of green gas.
The number of parties producing green gas and supplying it directly to the gas grid also increased. According to the platform, 24 new producers were added. An extrapolation of the half-year figures to the full year results in a production growth of 16 percent for 2026. The platform notes, however, that this calculation cannot take into account seasonal variations in production.
Director Ruud Paap of the Green Gas Platform places the figures against the backdrop of the bottlenecks producers have been dealing with for some time. According to him, the challenging situation surrounding permit issuance has not changed compared to last year. The fact that production continues to grow despite this, according to Paap, says something about the entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance of the producers.
Building on a year of recovery
The half-year figures follow a year in which growth was already picking up. Netbeheer Nederland reported in February that green gas production in the Netherlands would reach 336 million cubic meters in 2025, 14 percent more than in 2024. The number of feed-ins rose from 92 to 108 in the same year, with the sector passing the 100 mark. Grid operators pointed out at the time that scarcity on the electricity grid was increasing demand for additional forms of energy.
Upon the publication of those annual figures, the Green Gas Platform identified the conditions necessary to sustain growth. The blending obligation was identified at the time as an important step, as it requires energy suppliers to deliver a minimum percentage of green gas and thereby provides the market with insight into future demand. In addition to permitting processes, the platform also cited nitrogen issues and grid congestion as factors determining the pace at which new projects can be realized.
The benchmark is in The Hague
The bill regulating this obligation is currently before the House of Representatives. The Advisory Division of the Council of State issued an opinion on 18 March 2026, after which the proposal was submitted in May and taken up consideration by the Climate and Green Growth Committee in June. The intended date of entry into force is 1 January 2027. According to the central government's legislative calendar, the consumption of green gas must increase to approximately 840 million cubic meters per year from 2031 via a growth path.
Compared to the 336 million cubic meters of production in 2025, that growth path shows how much more is still needed. Moreover, the ambition of the Green Gas Platform extends further, as the four affiliated organizations have joined forces around the goal of producing two billion cubic meters of green gas per year by 2030. Since 2022, the platform has consisted of Groen Gas Nederland, the 2bcm Alliance, the Biogas Branche Organisatie, and the Vereniging Industriële Vergisters.
