Today, March 24, 2025, we are commemorating a special moment in the Dutch energy transition: Green Energy Day. This day marks the moment when all sustainable energy produced in the Netherlands that year is 'used up' if we were to use it consecutively. This year, we have moved forward no less than 16 days compared to 2024, when Green Energy Day fell on March 8. For comparison: in 2010, this day already fell on January 15. The trend is clear: the Netherlands is making great strides towards a sustainable future.
Biomass is a crucial pillar of our sustainable energy supply that should not be overlooked. Biomass includes organic material, such as wood, agricultural waste and residual flows, that can be converted into energy. These renewable sources can not only provide energy, but also contribute to the circular economy by reducing waste and reusing raw materials. Biobased raw materials are increasingly used in the production of biofuels, which are made from everyday waste and residual flows such as used frying fat. These are mixed with traditional fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel, thereby reducing our ecological footprint. This makes biomass a valuable addition to our sustainable energy landscape.
The increase in solar energy is also one of the factors behind this shift. In recent years, we have installed solar panels on our roofs en masse, which means we are increasingly using the sun as an energy source. In addition, we are also harnessing the power of the wind, with windmills on both land and sea, which also contribute to our electricity production.
Yet it is clear that we need to take further steps to make Green Energy Day fall on December 2050 in 31. This means moving the date forward by as much as twelve days each year. The road to a fully sustainable energy supply is challenging, but the progress we have made so far is encouraging.
Let’s celebrate this Green Energy Day as a testament to what we can achieve together. Every step we take, whether it’s solar panels, wind power or harnessing biomass, brings us closer to a cleaner, more sustainable future for everyone.
Join us and contribute to the energy transition!
