The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a new report on how bioenergy production can be better integrated into broader bioeconomy networks. Instead of using biofeedstocks for just one purpose, the report advocates “Synergies for bioenergy supply chains in bioeconomy networks” for a system in which energy, materials and nutrients are combined more intelligently.
Traditionally, bio-based feedstocks, such as wood waste and agricultural residues, are often used for a single purpose, such as electricity production or biofuels. This creates a linear value chain, in which residual flows can be lost. The IEA report highlights that an integrated approach, in which feedstocks are used for multiple purposes within a broader network, is both more sustainable and more economical.
By linking bioenergy production to other sectors, such as the chemical industry and agriculture, smarter, more efficient chains are created. For example, by-products of bioenergy can be used as raw materials for bioplastics or soil enrichers, which results in less waste and optimal use of raw materials.

This research is part of the Bioeconomy Synergies (BioSyn) Initiative, which will be implemented between 2022 and 2025 by IEA Bioenergy Task 40. The aim is to strengthen collaboration between different bioenergy initiatives and thus accelerate the transition to a more sustainable bioeconomy.
