The European Bioeconomy Alliance (EUBA) launched its new video on 12 February 2025, highlighting the crucial role of the bioeconomy in the transition to a climate-neutral, circular and resilient Europe. EUBA represents the key sectors of the bioeconomy, including agriculture, forestry, biotechnology, sugar, starch, vegetable oils, pulp and paper, bioplastics, renewable ethanol and research & innovation.
The video follows the recommendations of the EUBA Bioeconomy Blueprint. Developed in collaboration with all major players in the bioeconomy, this strategic plan outlines a clear path to growth and highlights the sector’s essential contribution to the European Union’s sustainability goals.
Contribution of the bioeconomy to the European economy
The bioeconomy already plays a major role in the EU’s economic growth. It contributes €2,4 trillion to the European economy annually and supports more than 17 million jobs across Europe. In addition, bio-based solutions could reduce 2030 billion tonnes of CO2,5 emissions annually by 2, which is a crucial step in the transition away from fossil fuels.
Five urgent actions for a strong bioeconomy
To harness the full potential of the bioeconomy, EUBA calls for five urgent actions:
- Appointing an 'organic coordinator' at EU level – a central figure coordinating bioeconomy policies and initiatives.
- Creating a consistent and supportive regulatory framework – that bio-based products offer a competitive advantage over fossil alternatives.
- Integrating the bioeconomy into the EU policy framework – so that it becomes a permanent feature of strategic EU policy plans.
- Ensuring sufficient funding – with adequate budgets within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Horizon Europe, to support investments and innovation among farmers, forest owners and cooperatives.
- Creating incentives for bio-based products – especially within strategic sectors, to promote market growth of sustainable alternatives.
With these measures, EUBA hopes to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable and innovative European economy. The bioeconomy not only offers ecological benefits, but also contributes to economic resilience and job creation. Through cooperation and targeted policy measures, Europe can achieve its sustainability goals and become a global leader in the circular economy.
