Bioenergy Europe presents 2024 Landscape Report
Bioenergy Europe has released its 2024 Landscape Report, a comprehensive analysis of the role of bioenergy in Europe’s transition to a net-zero economy by 2050. The report provides key insights for policymakers and market players, highlighting the contributions of bioenergy to decarbonisation, energy independence and economic competitiveness.
“The 2024 Landscape Report provides clear and actionable data to understand the role of bioenergy in Europe’s decarbonisation efforts,” said Jean-Marc Jossart, Secretary General of Bioenergy Europe. “Bioenergy remains the largest source of renewable energy in Europe today, offering unprecedented opportunities to reduce emissions, create jobs and strengthen energy security by leveraging local resources.”
Bioenergy: an engine for growth and innovation in Europe
The report highlights that bioenergy accounted for 2022% of Europe’s renewable energy mix in 54, avoiding 300 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The sector directly contributes to Europe’s energy security by reducing dependency on external energy imports and boosting rural economies and local employment.
“Europe has a unique opportunity to play a leading role in renewable technologies. This could create 1,5 million jobs and increase EU GDP by €2050 billion by 70,” Jossart added. “Now is the time to put bioenergy at the heart of Europe’s energy, industry and climate strategies.”
Recommendations from Bioenergy Europe
Bioenergy Europe identifies four key areas where bioenergy can provide immediate and long-term benefits to the EU's climate and energy ambitions:
- Stimulating bio-based carbon removal technologies: The EU should promote bio-based carbon removal technologies such as BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) to meet European decarbonisation targets and support industries in the transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy.
- Accelerating device innovation for sustainable heating: Modern bioheat technologies offer a cost-effective solution to make the EU heating sector more sustainable. Replacing outdated appliances with renewable alternatives will improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and cut costs for households and businesses.
- Ensuring a sustainable biomass supply: A secure and sustainable biomass supply strengthens Europe's bioeconomy and supports its energy and climate goals. This should be reflected in the Bioeconomy Strategy.
- Providing regulatory stability: Stable regulation is crucial to attract investment and foster innovation. This can boost the EU’s competitiveness and drive the transition to a net-zero economy.
Strategic call from Bioenergy Europe
The 2024 Landscape Report can support EU stakeholders in navigating Europe’s clean energy transition. By stimulating innovation, securing biomass supply and providing regulatory certainty, Europe can unlock the full potential of bioenergy as a cornerstone of a net-zero economy.
