The Optoppen.org platform has been officially launched. This English-language website offers a wealth of information and tools to stimulate the biobased topping up of buildings. The goal: contributing to climate goals, more efficient use of urban space and extending the lifespan of existing buildings.
The topping up of buildings, whereby extra living or working floors are added, can often be done within the load-bearing capacity of the existing structure. By using lightweight prefabricated building materials such as wood, not only is the load on the structure limited, but also actively CO2 is stored. As a result, biobased topping up offers a sustainable alternative to demolition and new construction, with lower CO2 emissions and more preservation of existing buildings.
Feasibility tool: insight into possibilities
One of the core features of Optoppen.org is the innovative feasibility tool, developed by Mule Studio in collaboration with Whitby Wood. This 3D web application allows users to easily calculate how many additional storeys an existing building can accommodate.
By entering specific building characteristics, such as typology, construction type, dimensions and function, the tool generates an expansion plan. This plan provides insight into the number of possible new floors, the amount of extra floor space created and the amount of CO2 captured by the new floors.
Results are immediately displayed in a visual expansion plan, which can be shared with colleagues and project teams. The tool works on both desktop and mobile devices, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Case studies and policy information
In addition to the feasibility tool, Optoppen.org offers an extensive database of inspiring case studies from cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam and London. Policymakers and developers can also benefit from a collection of policies around biobased construction methods. This makes the platform a valuable resource for building owners, investors, developers and urban planners who want to implement innovative and sustainable solutions.
A European initiative for a sustainable future
Optoppen.org was developed by a European consortium, consisting of parties such as Whitby Wood, Holland Houtland and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). The launch was made possible by Built by Nature, a network and subsidy fund that supports sustainable building innovations.
According to the initiators, Optoppen.org offers not only practical tools, but also inspiration and knowledge to make urban areas more liveable and sustainable. “With this platform, we want to increase the value of existing buildings, support urban densification and contribute to climate goals.”
