Biogenic CO2 will become increasingly important in the future as a replacement for fossil CO2 in the chemical and food industries, as a source of CO2 for Carbon Capture and Storage (for negative emissions) and as a renewable carbon source for carbon-based e-fuels or e-products. Purifying CO2-rich residual gas from biogas plants is a promising option to supply renewable CO2.
A recent report entitled: 'Renewable CO2 from food waste based biogas – a case story from Switzerland' presents an innovative biogas plant in Nesselnbach, Switzerland. This plant processes the waste gas to convert CO2 into a commercial product.
The case shows that the CO2 upgrading process can be coupled to existing biogas plants. Liquefaction of the CO2 is of great importance for its transport. It is expected that a growing number of plants will improve availability and possibly further reduce costs. However, it is currently difficult to make the renewable CO2 market economically viable without supporting regulations. If further development is desired in the field of use or storage of biogenic CO2, policy measures will be needed to support this.
