The Demonstration Energy and Climate Innovation (DEI+) subsidy scheme is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. In this decade, Dutch companies have collectively invested around €1,76 billion in innovative projects that contribute to reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, thanks to the DEI+ subsidy. A large proportion of the companies that used this scheme, around 60%, are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Over the past ten years, 395 projects have received a DEI+ grant, of which 257 have now been successfully completed. The projects mainly focused on reducing the use of fossil fuels, improving energy efficiency and electrifying processes. Almost half of the innovations have now been successfully implemented in the market, while other projects are still in further development phases.
Focus on sustainability and innovation
The DEI+ scheme supports innovative pilot, demonstration and practical projects that contribute to the sustainability of the Dutch energy system, the built environment and industry. These projects include a variety of initiatives, ranging from energy storage systems and the use of hydrogen to energy conservation and the circular economy.
Recycled yarns
Spinning Jenny, a start-up from Nijverdal, is one of the companies that has benefited from the DEI+ subsidy. The company, which specialises in the production of yarns from recycled textiles, received financial support for the project 'Lowtex to Hightex'. According to CEO Paula Gerritsen, the subsidy not only provided crucial start-up capital, but also enabled the company to largely automate processes and attract €7 million in new investments.
New circular economy subsidy round opened
Currently, companies can again apply for DEI+ subsidies, specifically aimed at circular economy projects. These applications can be submitted until 1 November 2024, with a maximum subsidy of €3 million per project. Interested companies can submit their application via the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
About the DEI+ scheme
The Demonstration Energy and Climate Innovation (DEI+) is a subsidy scheme that supports companies in testing energy innovations. These innovations focus on sustainability within production processes or reducing CO2 emissions. The scheme is implemented by the RVO on behalf of the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth.
