Yesterday, on Budget Day, the new government program was presented, and I cannot help but be enthusiastic about the direction that has been chosen. The cabinet shows that they are serious about the energy transition and the green growth that goes with it. For me, as director of the Platform Bio-Economy, this is a confirmation that we are on the right track. The question now is: how are we going to give substance to this together?
The Netherlands must grow greener
The challenges we face are enormous. Climate change and energy independence are top priorities and require radical choices. We need to make the transition to sustainable and affordable energy, and industry needs to become greener. These are not topics that are far removed from us—this affects us all. The idea that the Netherlands needs to become less dependent on foreign energy sources is something I personally strongly believe in. We need to have control over our energy supply, and the bioeconomy can play a huge role in this.
The bioeconomy offers direct solutions to make the industry more sustainable. Think of the use of biomass and residual flows. These are natural sources that we can use intelligently to replace fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions. The fact that the government is focusing on green economic opportunities is an important recognition of the contribution that we, as a sector, can make. I believe that this offers us, but also the many innovative companies and entrepreneurs in our network, enormous opportunities to contribute to this transition.
Nuclear energy and sustainable energy: a balanced mix
The government program also pays a lot of attention to nuclear energy. That can be a difficult subject for some, but I see it as a pragmatic choice. Nuclear energy can be a stable source of energy without directly releasing CO2, and that is an advantage that we should use.
However, I would like to emphasise that there are other sustainable energy sources that should play a central role in our future. The bio-economy offers a natural, renewable solution, for example by using biomass as an energy source alongside wind and solar energy. This is a robust and flexible energy system that makes us less dependent on scarce fossil resources. I am pleased that the government sees this opportunity and invites us to work together on a future in which these sources play a major role.
Creating green markets: opportunities are there for the taking
What I particularly appreciate in the government’s plans is the confidence in the power of Dutch entrepreneurs and innovators. Minister Hermans emphasizes that we must seize the green economic opportunities, and that is exactly what I personally advocate. Entrepreneurship and creativity are the engines of change, and the government program creates space for companies to flourish within this green transition. This is essential for a healthy future—economically and ecologically.
The energy transition is not only a challenge, but also a huge opportunity. I believe that as a country we can maintain our prosperity, and even increase it, by leading the way in innovation and sustainability. The Netherlands has the knowledge, experience and entrepreneurial spirit to lead this transition. The fact that the government recognizes this is an important step. It is now up to us to further expand this position.
Conclusion: together towards a sustainable future
The government program puts the Netherlands on a clear, green course. When I look at the ambition and the concrete steps that the cabinet is now taking, I am convinced that the Bio-Economy Platform can play a key role in achieving the climate goals. But we cannot do this alone. It requires a joint effort from companies, governments and social organizations.
The climate and energy goals are undoubtedly ambitious, but I am confident that with the right choices and cooperation we can achieve them. It is time that we as a society take responsibility for our future. Not only for ourselves, but especially for the generations that come after us.
We have the knowledge, we have the resources, and we have the opportunities. Let's seize them together.
