The first prototype of the diesel engine, designed by Rudolf Diesel, was started on August 10, 1894 in Augsburg, Germany. He developed this diesel engine that could run on both vegetable and petroleum oils, making organic oils renewable and sustainable fuel sources in the near future.
As Mr. Diesel predicted, this day aims to raise awareness of the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative source for vehicles and machinery.
What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a non-fossil fuel and an alternative to the conventional diesel we currently use in our vehicles. It is produced from oil-rich crops and animal fats. Since oil supplies will eventually run out and to reduce dependence on oil-exporting countries, the search for replacement fuels is on. Rapeseed oil appears to have the best characteristics and is suitable for our climate, but there are more alternatives.
