In an important step to make its data freely accessible, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has upgraded the Countries and Regions section of its website. This innovation includes a comprehensive collection of statistics and information at global, regional and national levels.
The renewed country pages are the latest example of how the IEA is meeting recent mandates from its member states for free and accessible data. Founded in 1974 to promote energy security and provide authoritative analysis and policy advice, the IEA remains committed to providing timely and actionable data to policymakers and other stakeholders.
The Countries section of their website now offers 172 regional and national pages with an up-to-date overview of the energy system and recent trends. This includes data on the energy mix, CO2 emissions, renewable energy, energy efficiency and the production, trade and consumption of electricity, oil, biofuels, gas and coal. The sections are interactively designed to guide readers through energy flows and balances.
Reliable and timely energy data is crucial for developing effective energy policies and long-term investment plans. The IEA Energy Data Center provides one of the world's most authoritative and comprehensive sources of global energy data. The focus is on quality, comparability and international coordination, with close cooperation with national offices and other stakeholders. The new country and region pages are part of the IEA's efforts to make this crucial data freely available and usable online.
“Good policy comes first and foremost from good data,” said Nick Johnstone, Chief Statistician at the IEA. “For 50 years, the IEA has provided countries with the data they need to design, implement and evaluate their energy policies. With rapid changes in energy markets and systems, the value of high-quality data continues to increase, and the IEA is keeping pace with these needs. The country and region pages are just one example of our ongoing strategy to make our data freely accessible to the widest possible range of users.”
The pages also reflect the Agency's efforts to provide timely, valuable and impactful advice to governments worldwide. The IEA periodically conducts comprehensive assessments of the energy policies of its member states and also of partner countries. These assessments, based on the IEA's world-class energy data, aim to guide the energy transition and promote energy security.
In 2024, the review process was modernized together with the Member States to make Energy Policy Reviews even more valuable. The new Energy Policy Review provides high-quality advice on policy development and highlights best practices. The updated Countries section supplements these reviews with interactive and up-to-date information about energy systems, which supports policymakers in their decision-making.
With these upgrades, the IEA reaffirms its commitment to making high-quality energy data and analysis available to a broad audience, which is essential to supporting sustainable energy policy and planning worldwide.
