On Friday, June 7, Platform Bio-Economie presented the 12th edition of the annual report on the use of woody biomass in the Netherlands. It is very important that transparent and well-founded figures can be made available to government, the business community and ultimately to Dutch citizens so that they can monitor developments in this domain. Collaboration between the government and the business community is of great importance, which is underlined by the good participation in this report.
Just like last year, this report also shows that woody biomass is still mainly used for energy production. However, the biomass installations are increasingly being combined with other energy systems such as batteries and e-boilers and advanced ICT systems in order to optimally respond to the increasing demand for flexible supply of electricity and heat in addition to, among other things, an increasing share of variable electricity from sun and wind.
Jos Keurentjes, chairman of the Bio-Economics Platform: “In the coming years, biomass use will have to expand significantly towards biofuels, green gas and chemicals and related sectors. With the Bio-Economy Platform (PBE), we respond to this expansion in the market and actively seek cooperation with these sectors. In order to provide a complete picture of the development of the use of biomass in the Netherlands in the coming years, it is desirable to also broaden the scope of this report. In consultation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) and market parties, we will investigate how we can implement this in the future.”
Finally, Platform Bio-Economie would like to express its gratitude to EZK, I&W, RVO, Biomass Research and all participating companies for their contribution to the creation of this report. The power and relevance of this lies in the unity and transparency!
On Wednesday, June 19, Hans Langeveld will present the report during the PBE Business Meeting, where more information will be provided on the content and results of this report.
