On April 12, the Council of the European Union approved the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). accepted. This new version of the legislation will promote renovation and encourage the replacement of old, inefficient fossil fuel boilers with on-site renewable energy sources, including biomass.
Bioenergy Europe sees the new EPBD as a good step forward in phasing out fossil fuels from the European heating and cooling sector, which represents almost half of the EU's energy consumption.
In parallel with the transition to green energy, the EU must also stimulate domestic energy production to increase energy security and mitigate climate change. Bioenergy is an effective and versatile renewable solution that can help achieve both goals and is already responsible for 85% of renewable heat in the EU. However, the heating sector is still dominated by fossil fuels.
The implementation of the directive is imminent. To accelerate the transition to green energy and increase energy security, Bioenergy Europe calls on EU Member States to:
- Provide financing to replace fossil fuel heaters,
- Include the modernization of biomass heating systems in their national building renovation plans,
- And to propose a plan for strategic biomass hubs.
