Martin van Rijn, chairman of Aedes, received the new Handbook 'Housing in timber' from Karo van Dongen, on behalf of the Brabantse Houtbouw Lente corporations, on February 26, 2024. Timber construction offers opportunities for social housing because it is sustainable, biobased and healthy.
The environmental benefit lies in reducing CO2 emissions compared to traditional construction methods. But timber construction also ensures nitrogen reduction, CO2 storage and is circular. The new manual helps corporations that are going to build in wood and other parties that are interested in housing in wood.
Sustainable and affordable
Martin van Rijn, chairman of Aedes: 'The housing association sector is becoming more sustainable at a rapid pace. To contribute to reducing global warming, we use various innovative techniques. The transition to timber construction is one of them. This handbook helps housing associations to work with timber construction more often as clients. A pleasant side effect is that in the long term, when scaling up with wood, construction can be built competitively price-wise. And that is good for affordability.'
Now take the step towards timber construction
Karo van Dongen, Alwel director and chairman of De Groene Huisvesters: 'Timber construction can make an important contribution to the social housing challenge. And we can and are already doing it! Sustainability, circularity and living comfort come together in one product. Time to really take the step forward and get started! This handbook with knowledge and lessons will help with that!'
