Coffee Based and Sodexo announced the launch of the Cafea Cup on February 15, a circular innovation in the world of reusable cups. Made with silver membranes that are released when roasting coffee beans and made entirely from plant-based materials, that makes this cup unique.
The Cafea Cup is the latest product from Coffee Based, a leader in the circular economy that uses coffee waste as a raw material for products. Lisanne Addink, CEO of Coffee Based: “We have already won a number of innovation awards because we have managed to make a stylish coffee cup with coffee grounds that meets European food safety requirements. As of today, we can put even more residual materials from the coffee chain to good use, because we now also use the membranes of the coffee bean. The fact that as a small Dutch company we can come up with this great innovation makes me very proud. Sodexo was immediately interested and will be the first service provider to use the cups for their customers.”
An answer to the SUP legislation
The collaboration between Coffee Based and Sodexo comes at a logical time. The new SUP legislation requires an alternative to disposable cups, because since January 1, disposable cups are no longer allowed in the office. Marloes van der Have, CSR manager of Sodexo: “Sodexo is continuously looking for innovative sustainable solutions. We therefore often collaborate with innovation parties such as Coffee Based. With the Cafea Cup we not only offer a reusable product that replaces disposable cups, the cup is also made from material that would otherwise have become waste. Our customers are increasingly asking for products that bring about positive change and we are happy to offer them that.”
