At a time when sustainability and environmental awareness are becoming increasingly important, the municipality of Bergen op Zoom took a special initiative in 2017: the establishment of the BioBest Trophy. This prize was awarded to the most sustainable and environmentally friendly car that took part in the big parade in the 'Krabbegat'. Over the years, the focus of the trophy has shifted to not only bio-based materials, but also to circular construction methods, in which recycled materials are central.
Under the leadership of councilor Dominique Hopmans, the municipality of Bergen op Zoom has revived the trophy as the Circular BioBest Trophy. This is awarded to construction clubs that work with sustainable and reused building materials. The aim is to reduce the waste flow and at the same time stimulate creativity and innovation in the construction world.
The winner of this prestigious prize this year is construction club De Waterstraot from Halsteren. During the Bergse Vastenavendparade they not only won the first prize in the Extra Large Cars category, but also the coveted Circular BioBest Trophy with their creation 'Bozaltus, Creator of the Leut'.
The Circular BioBest Trophy is not just a prize; it is an encouragement for construction clubs to build biobased and circular and thus contribute to a more sustainable future. The trophy, designed by artist Koen van der Steen, symbolizes the search for reusable materials.
The jury of the Circular BioBest Trophy recognizes the challenges associated with using alternative materials, especially when building oversized vehicles. Construction club De Waterstraot is praised for their courage and dedication to sustainability. According to the jury, they are clearly making progress in the use of alternative materials and serve as inspiration for other construction clubs.
