Relement, Worlée Chemie and Baril Coatings have jointly developed a bio-based coating. The bio-raw material replaces phthalic anhydride, which is produced from fossil raw materials. The three parties worked on this development for three years.
A successful demonstration proved that industrial performance coatings can be durable. It contains the highest percentage of biobased content ever achieved.
For years, the coating resin industry has attempted to replace fossil phthalic anhydride.
The partners now use the biobased methyl phthalic anhydride (bio-MPA) developed by Relement.
The launch product bio MPA appears to be a renewable solution: it not only replaces fossil-based ingredients, but a water-based coating has also been developed to reduce emissions and improve the safety profile. In addition, other benefits have been found that can be attributed to the use of bio-MPA.
Relement now thinks it can scale up the product to a tonne scale. The company is therefore now looking for a contract manufacturer who can produce the product on this scale in 2024.
