Bioenergy Europe's Landscape Statistical Report 2023 highlights the crucial role of bioenergy in the EU's renewable landscape. While renewable energy shows resilience, imported fossil fuels remain a concern, posing risks to energy security. Biomass leads as a sustainable alternative, with 10,2% of the EU's energy consumption. The report calls for bioenergy to reach the revised target of 42,5% renewable energy by 2030.
Energy has taken on new importance in European policy, as the EU has sought to reduce market pressure, prevent supply disruptions and reform the entire energy system. In recent years, the EU has significantly increased the use of renewable sources and improved energy efficiency, but more needs to be done to achieve its ambitious climate goals, while also ensuring affordable, reliable and accessible energy for households, and strengthening the competitive position of its industry. The only way to achieve these diverse objectives is to support investments in clean technologies, including bioenergy from solid biomass.
