Since this week, the Climate and Energy Choice Compass has been online: climate-energie.kieskompas.nl By completing 27 statements about climate and energy, voters find out how their own opinions relate to the positions of political parties.
Chairman of the Dutch Sustainable Energy Association (NVDE) Olof van der Gaag, initiators of the Climate and Energy Choice Compass: “Climate and energy have become an indispensable part of the political debate. Rightly so, because major changes are taking place that affect people's daily lives, our entire economy and our living environment. With all the political choices that entails. This Climate and Energy Voting Compass does not provide voting advice, but helps sharpen opinions and gives people insight into their position in the political landscape on these issues.”
The statements concern all aspects of the energy transition and climate policy. What forms of sustainable generation are in our future energy mix? What scope will aviation be given? Where should the bill for developments in industry or the built environment end up? How much coercion can the government exercise? And what do we consider fair (also in a global perspective)? Five answers are possible per statement, varying in degree of agreement.
After completing the statements, the voter can see where he or she stands compared to the 18 political parties that are already in the House or are polled for at least one seat. All positions of the political parties have been checked based on official party documents and/or positions. The political landscape is presented along two axes: left/right and conservative climate policy/activating climate policy.

The Climate and Energy Choice Compass is an initiative of the Dutch Sustainable Energy Association (NVDE) and is made possible by its members EBN, Gasunie and Netbeheer Nederland. The voting aid was developed by Kieskompas, an independent research institute with scientific roots.
