European Bioenergy Future (EBF) conference from 28 – 29 November 2023 will return to BluePoint Brussels (Auguste Reyerslaan 80, 1030), with a rich program and interesting pre- and post-conference events. EBF, organized by Bioenergy Europe, is designed as a leading event for the European bioenergy sector, bringing together policy and market actors.
EBF 2023 most important topics
The bioenergy sector is in a very complex situation: on the one hand it is expanding its scope and focus due to the speed of the energy transition and the need to reach net-zero emissions, but on the other hand it is facing challenges arising from the geopolitical and economic context and the complications arising from updated and new legislation. Navigating these turbulent waters is difficult. EBF2023 will bring together a diverse group of speakers and panelists with the aim of providing participants with up-to-date knowledge on the EU policy context and market trends and providing networking opportunities.
EBF will focus on the following key topics in a series of sessions:
Session: The bioenergy front – shared challenges and opportunities (November 28, 2023, 10:40 AM – 12:00 PM)
Bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source in Europe and the only one present in all three main energy sectors (electricity, heat, transport) – but it also comes in all kinds of forms and carriers: solid biomass, biofuels, biogas. The Secretaries General of the bioenergy associations in Brussels (EBA, ePURE, EBB, Bioenergy Europe) will participate in this session to discuss common challenges, opportunities and the way forward in the future energy markets.
Session: Ready for REDIII? – What is the future for the sustainability requirements for bioenergy (November 28, 2023, 13:30 PM – 15:30 PM)
The political framework for biomass sustainability under REDIII has been adopted, but challenges to implementation remain, while other legislation, such as EUDR, imposes new challenges on operators. This session examines the current state and future trends for bioenergy sustainability requirements.
Session: Energy-intensive industries and bioenergy – the evolving interaction (November 28, 2023, 16:00 PM – 17:30 PM)
Energy-intensive industries are increasingly exploring bioenergy to achieve their emissions reduction targets in a cost-effective manner. Join this session with representatives from the steel, lime and magnesium oxide industries to hear about ongoing industrial projects that promise to open up entirely new markets for biomass.
Session: Bioenergy markets – from current turmoil to future prospects (November 29, 2023, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
In recent years, several bioenergy markets have been hit by immediate events, the first being the energy crisis, but also by changing legislation and megatrends in energy markets. This session will bring together several representatives from different bioenergy market segments (fuel producers, equipment manufacturers, industrial end-users) to discuss the current business environment but also the prospects for the future.
Session: Capturing the Future – What's Ahead for Bio-based Carbon Removal? (November 29, 2023, 13:30 PM – 15:30 PM)
Interest in carbon removal has never been greater as its necessity to achieve net-zero emissions is widely recognized. But are recent developments in EU policy (EU ETS, carbon removal certification framework) enough to drive the deployment of bioenergy-based solutions, or is more needed? Join this session to find out!
Session: Focusing regional bioenergy markets – How to achieve this on the ground (November 29, 2023, 16:00 PM - 17:30 PM)
Above all, bioenergy will always be a local energy solution for local energy demand. This session, organized in collaboration with FEDARENE and the Energy Efficiency Watch LIFE Project, will bring together a wide range of panellists representing regions and local/regional energy agencies from across Europe to present their local initiatives focused on bioenergy market adoption within the wider Green Deal Rollout.
