Entrepreneurs can apply for the Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition Incentive (SDE++) again from September 5 to October 5, 2023. The European Commission has approved the changes in the new opening of the SDE++. The main stumbling block were the so-called 'fences' in the budget.
Budget reserved for less profitable techniques
Earlier this year, the opening from June 6 to July 6 was canceled because the European Commission had not yet given the green light for the gates. The committee first wanted to determine whether this change in the scheme constituted permitted state aid. The fences ensure that certain technologies have a greater chance of receiving a subsidy.
This concerns techniques that produce low-temperature heat, high-temperature heat and molecules (green gas and hydrogen). A budget has been reserved for this in 2023, because these are now even less profitable. But in the long term, these are important for the energy transition (the transition from fossil fuels to sustainably generated energy).
Main changes
The SDE++ has some other changes in the new opening round:
- In 2023, there will no longer be a production ceiling for the generation of renewable electricity on land.
- The production ceiling no longer applies to the capture and storage of CO2 (CCS).
- A category has been added: the air-water heat pump.
- Solar PV installations smaller than 1 MWp may now supply a maximum of 50% of the peak power back to the electricity grid.
The text of the regulations was published in the Government Gazette on 24 July. The SDE++ budget this year is €8 billion.
