In Spain, the demand for knowledge and products that make the economy circular is growing. Greening, sustainability and digitalization are important for the Spanish government. There is also a new European policy on circular economies. Member States must use raw materials and by-products as best as possible. They must prevent waste. This is more sustainable and better for the environment.
Opportunities in residual flows of fruit and vegetables
The attention to a circular economy also offers opportunities in the Spanish horticultural sector. This sector grows 20 million tons of fruit and vegetables every year. Residual flows are created during production and processing.
In Spain there are many poorly organized systems for processing waste and residual flows. The laws and regulations on this matter also differ per region. The sector currently uses few new technologies. Many vegetable residual flows are used as animal feed.
This offers opportunities for Dutch companies. Dutch knowledge and techniques can help reuse these residual flows. Through this trade mission we want to introduce Dutch innovative solutions for this in Spain.
