Letter to Parliament from outgoing minister Jetten
The outgoing cabinet published a letter to Parliament on Friday about the 'Green gas blending obligation.' In it, outgoing Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten states that energy companies will be obliged to mix green gas with the natural gas they supply by 2030. The intention is that this will create a CO2-emission reduction of 20% is achieved throughout the chain.
Jetten is thus following advice from CE Delft not to focus on gas volumes in the green gas blending obligation, but on emissions saved. The consequence of this choice is that it becomes more difficult for gas companies to estimate exactly how much green gas needs to be produced and blended to achieve the target. However, the alternative would be uncertainty about the actual emission reduction achieved.
Green gas (biomethane) is a gas mixture produced by the fermentation or gasification of bio-raw materials, and which, after cleaning and reprocessing, has the same composition as natural gas (methane). CE Delft is currently investigating the consequences of possible green gas production from non-biogenic raw materials and hydrogen.
The Green Gas Platform has responded happily to the letter to Parliament.
