The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has published a roadmap on safe and circular design in industrial biotechnology.
This publication is one of the results of the research program DIRECT: Designing inclusively for a safe and sustainable circular economy transition. Including principles in the areas of safety, sustainability and circularity in the design process is central.
Tools
In three practical studies, RIVM specifically looked at the sectors of industrial biotechnology, plastic medical devices and solar panels. It has been determined for each sector what can be improved and what is required for this.
For example, a number of tools for industrial biotechnology are highlighted for assessing the successive process steps: the selection and treatment of bio raw materials (biomass resource), the fermentation process, the micro-organisms used and the 'down stream processing' (extraction, purification, etc.). .).
The roadmap also contains a useful overview of Dutch and European legislation that companies in industrial biotechnology have to deal with.
