The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated March 8 as National Biobased Products Day, an annual day designed to raise awareness of biobased products – how they are made, what they are made from, their many benefits and the wide variety of products that are already available for use at home, in the office, on the playground, on construction sites and in landscaping.
National Biobased Products Day is an initiative of the Ministry's Biopreferred program, which encourages all companies and organizations within the broad field of the bioeconomy to participate in this event and engage customers, employees, stakeholders, partners and community members to participate in the celebration.
The Biopreferred incentive program aims to increase the purchase and use of bio-based products, in order to stimulate economic development, create new jobs and create new markets for agricultural raw materials. Part of these efforts includes establishing a mandatory minimum share of biobased content for some federally purchased products. In this respect, the US appears to be ahead of the European Union.
