Lodewijk Asscher will become the new, independent chairman of the Sustainable Aviation Table (DLT). As leader of this partnership, which brings together airports, airlines, knowledge institutions, fuel producers and the manufacturing industry, he will drive the sustainability of the aviation sector in the coming years.
Aviation must become more sustainable in the coming years. Concrete objectives have been set for this in the 2019 Sustainable Aviation Agreement. It is up to Lodewijk Asscher to realize these ambitions together with all partners of the DLT.
“Tackling climate change is a huge task facing the world, and aviation must also play its part. I would like to contribute to that,” says Lodewijk Asscher.
For example, work is being done on the development of electric aircraft for short distances, including in the Caribbean Netherlands. The intention is also for ground operations at Dutch airports to become emission-free by, for example, making aircraft taxiing electric, and the Netherlands aims to achieve a 2030% blending of sustainable fuels by 14.
The ambitions are greater for the longer term. Between 2030 and 2050, the Netherlands wants to make domestic flights fully electric, halve international aviation emissions compared to 2005 and produce synthetic kerosene (on a large scale). The year 2070 is the end goal: aviation must then be completely emission-free, and the aim is for all European flights to be operated electrically.
