A new biogas plant at the sewage treatment plant in Etten was officially opened on Thursday, October 6, 2022. In this industrial treatment plant, biogas is generated from the residual water of Papierfabriek Doetinchem.
The collaborating parties Papierfabriek Doetinchem, Waterstromen and the Rijn en IJssel Water Board produce biogas and save energy. Part of the biogas is returned to the paper factory to replace natural gas; the other part is supplied to the natural gas network.
The residual water from Papierfabriek Doetinchem contains a lot of organic matter and has a high temperature. By keeping this residual water separated from the waste water of other households and companies, it can be treated more sustainably and biogas can be produced. In this way, the residual flow from the Doetinchem Paper Factory produces energy, instead of requiring electricity to purify that residual flow in the sewage treatment plant.
Part of this biogas, together with the biogas that the Rijn en IJssel Water Board already produces from the sludge fermentation in the sewage treatment plant, is used to replace natural gas at Papierfabriek Doetinchem itself. The remainder is upgraded into green gas and supplied to the natural gas network. In this project, Waterstromen is responsible for the realization and operation of the industrial treatment installation. The project was made possible by a financial contribution from the Province of Gelderland and the European Union.
