The Twence manure valorization plant was officially opened on Friday, October 7. Part of the regional pig manure surplus is processed here into new raw materials and energy. So 100% circular agriculture. In this way, Twence makes an important contribution to future-proof agriculture, solving the nitrogen problem and reducing CO2. In this way, Twence helps advance the circular economy and energy transition.
In Twente and parts of Salland and the Achterhoek there are approximately 975 pig farms with a significant manure surplus. By having part of this surplus processed, Twence offers a reliable and long-term solution to pig farmers in the region.
Contribution to energy target
250.000 tons of pig manure are processed annually. The biogas produced from the fermentation silos is captured and converted into green gas for 3.000 households. Tijs de Bree, Provincial Executive of the Province of Overijssel. “Twence took responsibility years ago to produce green gas from manure. If you see this from the current perspective, you can say that Twence already saw the urgency back then. The desire to get rid of natural gas has never been as great and palpable as it is now, so alternatives in the form of green gas are more than welcome. Twence makes a major contribution to our energy objectives.”
Climate and environmental improvement
In addition to energy production, scarce raw materials such as phosphate and potassium fertilizer are recovered. These fertilizer substitutes are used in circular agriculture and contribute to a better mineral balance and a healthier soil. The ammonia water extracted from the manure is used to reduce nitrogen emissions from the Twence Waste-to-Energy Plant. Manure consists of 90% water, which is purified during the process and returned to nature. This prevents many transport kilometers and improves water quality.
Example project
“The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) is looking for solutions to the challenges in the field of Nature, Water and Climate. This manure valorization installation is an example project for provinces and municipalities to show that manure processing can contribute to the major challenges we face in rural areas," says Floris Wolf, management team member and responsible for manure policy within the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
Together towards a sustainable region
Marc Kapteijn, Managing Director of Twence: “I am pleased that we have opened our installation today, after years of preparation. Twence can and wants to play an important role in regional sustainability. We are a company with a sustainable mission: we want to bring all waste and biomass back into the cycle by turning it into valuable raw materials and energy. In this way we make an important contribution to a circular economy and a sustainable society.”
