The government and industry members of the Biofuture Platform Initiative and Campaign announced the publication of their Biofuture Statement, which affirms the essential role of sustainable bio-based fuels, chemicals and materials to enable an inclusive transition to clean energy and a Net Zero, circular economy possible. The sustainable production and use of bio-based products is also key to increasing energy security, job creation and socio-economic development. Government and industry emphasize that achieving GHG reduction benefits, while preserving biodiversity and ensuring well-functioning environmental services, requires 1) improving evidence-based approaches to improve the quantification of sustainable biomass sources and 2) strengthening sustainability governance.
At the Global Clean Energy Action Forum in Pittsburh, USA, the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Biofuture Platform Initiative held consultations among government, industry and NGO leaders on the innovation, investments and policies needed to unlock the potential for bio-based fuels and chemicals. Participants emphasized that a stable policy framework, including coherence between related clean energy sectors, such as CCUS and hydrogen, would enable the transition to a circular bioeconomy. Developing markets for products with the highest use of biomass resources would encourage the private investments needed to realize the sustainable biofuture.
QUOTES FROM THE EVENT
“I am very pleased that Biofuture Platform Member States, including Brazil, are today issuing a high-level statement committing to an evidence-based approach to quantifying sustainable biomass availability and sustainability management. We hope this statement encourages more candid dialogue and coordination on the role of biobased products among experts, leaders and stakeholders.” – José Guilherme Resende, Secretary for Energy Planning and Development, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Brazil.
“It was a privilege to contribute to the GCEAF events organized by the Clean Energy Ministerial Biofuture Platform. On behalf of the industry, I have emphasized the urgent need for intensive public-private partnerships. Together, governments and industry need a more frank dialogue about what works and what doesn't work. When it comes to biofuels, the technology is there. Our government partners now have a critical role to play in sending a global demand signal to the market to unleash rapid commercialization. There is no time to lose.” – Bryan Sherbacow, Alder Fuels, CEO & President
“We are excited to join this timely gathering of global bioeconomy leaders at the Global Clean Energy Action Forum. Sharing best practices and hard-won experience is desperately needed to accelerate project development and implementation. During our 10-year drive to de-fossilize the global maritime sector, we have gained a deep understanding of what the best public/private drivers are to create real tipping points and systems change. We anticipate productive work with the CEM Biofuture Platform Initiative and its campaign to realize real solutions for a better world.” – Dirk Kronemeijer, founder & CEO GoodFuels
