Energy group RWE still wants to make the coal-fired power station in Eemshaven greener. The coal-fired power plant can now produce more power again now that less natural gas is coming in from Russia. Because the coal-fired power plant can now temporarily operate at full capacity again, the management wants to talk to the cabinet about its old plans to make the power plant as 'green' and sustainable as possible.
The fact that the Coal Power Plant could be put into use in 2015, even though it was already known at that time how polluting coal is, was possible because the intention was to capture the released CO2 and store it underground.
But after protests, the underground storage of CO2 was canceled, resulting in a coal-fired power plant whose CO2 emissions simply went into the air. However, the coal-fired power plant may only use 35% of its capacity. It was also determined that the coal-fired power plant in Eemshaven would use biomass as fuel: first twenty percent and later to one hundred percent.
The program Newspaper of the North reports on Wednesday that RWE, now that the power plant appears to be necessary again, would like to discuss the long-term future. The company therefore proposes to resume greening. to use more biofuel, and also wants to capture CO2. That CO2 can then be stored in the seabed, but can also be used as a raw material for the chemical industry in Delfzijl.
