GIDARA Energy and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are pleased to announce GIDARA's next advanced biofuel facility in the Netherlands: Advanced Methanol Rotterdam (“AMR”). The plant, located in the port of Rotterdam, will convert non-recyclable waste into advanced methanol. The advanced methanol achieves CO2 emission reductions as described in the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) and Fit-for-55 frameworks. The renewable fuel will replace fossil fuels, resulting in significant CO2 savings. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has made a unique location in the port available for this facility.
Converting non-recyclable waste into renewable fuels
Last year, GIDARA Energy announced Advanced Methanol Amsterdam, a state-of-the-art renewable fuels facility that will serve as a blueprint for AMR. The two facilities will be identical and utilize GIDARA's patented High-Temperature Winkler (HTW®) technology, which converts non-recyclable waste into renewable fuels. This technology has been used commercially at four other waste treatment facilities to clean syngas production facilities
Advanced Methanol Rotterdam will achieve a reduction of 350.000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO 2 eq) in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year, producing approximately 90.000 tonnes of renewable methanol annually by converting 180.000 tonnes of local non-recyclable waste currently being burned.
All side streams from the conversion process at the AMR facility will be used so that the CO 2 is captured and routed to local greenhouses; soil product residue is used for cement production; and other flows such as ammonia and salts will be sold and used as raw material for other industries and road salt respectively, creating a circular concept.
The facility is scheduled to begin detailed engineering and construction in the first half of 2023, when a permit is received, and start producing renewable methanol in 2025.
Wim van der Zande, CEO at GIDARA Energy:
“To meet the demand for cleaner fuels, GIDARA Energy must grow aggressively. This announcement from our Rotterdam facility shows how committed we are to tackling the environmental and waste challenges we all face. Because we have standardized our design and modularized our application, we are able to directly mimic the Amsterdam facility. Location, quality of infrastructure and access to a broad network of partners were leading factors in determining the location of our second facility. The collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam Authority makes it possible to develop the integral product value chain from waste to fuel and other valuable by-products.”
Port of Rotterdam CO 2 neutral in 2050
The 8,5 hectare AMR site is strategically located on Torontostraat in the Botlek area of the port of Rotterdam and is connected to raw material suppliers, storage terminals and other companies. The location of the facility was chosen to have an integrated product value chain within a short distance.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority's strategy is to facilitate existing industries in reducing their CO2 footprint and attracting new companies that fit in with the Port Authority's ambition to be a CO2050 neutral port and industrial complex by 2.
Allard Castelein, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority:
“We welcome GIDARA Energy's decision to set up this state-of-the-art sustainable methanol production facility in our port. The Advanced Methanol Rotterdam factory fits very well with our long-term vision for the transition of the industry in the port. This development also shows the importance of clear and reliable government policy regarding the energy transition. In this case, regulations surrounding the use of sustainable transport fuels encourage companies to invest in such installations.'
Advanced methanol
Advanced methanol is a versatile renewable transport fuel that can be used in the road, maritime and aviation sectors, among others, helping these sectors reduce their CO2 emissions and become more sustainable.
One of the main buyers of the AMR facility will be FinCo Fuel Group, a widespread network of sales companies including Gulf Bunkering, GoodFuels, Licorne Fuel, Dalergy Group and Gulf Netherlands. FinCo, based in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, is a major player in supplying various low-carbon energy carriers to road and shipping customers.
Bart-Willem ten Cate, Renewables Strategy & Development at FinCo Fuel Group:
“At FinCo we aim to rapidly increase the share of sustainable, renewable fuels by adding new and innovative products to our portfolio. The bio-methanol that GIDARA Energy will produce in the Advanced Methanol Rotterdam facility converts waste stream into a renewable fuel that we can offer our customers to replace diesel and fuel oil in shipping, both at sea and on our rivers. An additional advantage of bio-methanol is that it not only reduces CO 2 emissions, but also improves local air quality.”
