Yesterday, the Green Gas Platform presented its Multi-Year Program to Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy. The Green Gas Platform emerged from a merger of four trade organizations and sets out in the Multi-Year Program the actions that the sector will take to expand the production of green gas in the Netherlands. This includes support in the field of feedstock, the revenue model of entrepreneurs, support and permits, innovation and infrastructure. With the aim of making at least 2 BCM (2 billion m3) of green gas possible by 2030.
The production of green gas must make an important contribution to making the Netherlands more sustainable. Green gas, as an alternative to natural gas, is one of the most cost-efficient solutions in the energy transition, especially in the existing built environment and in industry. Green gas greens the gas system and therefore the heating system. Better insulation and heat pumps are used to make homes more sustainable. Where no sustainable solutions are available, green gas is the preferred solution. Green gas has an important role to play, particularly in peak and buffer capacity and for the greening of sustainable sources of heating networks.
Joining forces
With the establishment of the Green Gas Platform, the sector has joined forces to jointly implement the ambitions of the Green Gas Roadmap in 2020 at the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. Minister Jetten is therefore positive about this collaboration: “I am pleased with this step by the sector: integration contributes to better cooperation and forms a good basis for the development of the sector,” said Minister Jetten.
The program also pays attention to bio-raw materials.
Bio raw materials are needed to realize the growth ambition of green gas. Unlocking feedstock is necessary to enable a tenfold increase in green gas production. If we also include the production of biogas in methane equivalents, we are still talking about a fivefold increase. At the same time, the social and political debate in the Netherlands calls for stricter requirements for bio-raw materials in terms of composition and circularity. In short, this topic is complex but necessary to address.
2 BCM ambition
The Platform works together with its members to implement the strong ambition that has been further tightened and consolidated in the new coalition agreement with the announced green gas blending obligation. In addition to the use of green gas in homes in the built environment, it can also be used for heavy transport using bio-LNG in trucks and ships. In addition, green gas can provide high process temperatures for Dutch industry or be used as a raw material. The sector currently produces more than 200 million m³ of green gas. It is a significant challenge to achieve a tenfold increase in green gas production.
Strength strengthened
Gerard Kremer, chairman of the Green Gas Platform, is positive and has high expectations of the collaboration between the Platform, the market and various ministries: “Because the various industry organizations now work together under one platform, the effectiveness is strengthened. Where politics seems to be becoming increasingly fragmented, cooperation is the answer. Our mission that we must realize together with EZK is clear!”
