Tackling methane emissions from fossil fuels is essential to combating near-term global warming
Governments and energy companies have a big opportunity to reduce methane emissions, which is the most impactful way to limit climate change in the near term, according to a new IEA report released in early October.
The high demand for energy during the recovery from the crisis and the upcoming winter weather will cause an increase in CO2 emissions this year. This is mainly because countries are building up larger stocks of fossil fuels. According to the energy agency IEA, this development, which threatens record CO2 emissions, poses a threat to achieving the Paris climate goals.
China, India and other emerging economies are driving demand for coal. The United States is also about to increase its use of this polluting fossil fuel for the first time in almost a decade, the IEA said. Rising gas prices and power generation issues in recent weeks have also fueled debate about the impact of the global transition to cleaner energy.
