Independent research by Indufor refutes the claim of environmental organizations that biomass from Estonia does not meet sustainability requirements. This claim was made based on research conducted by SOMO. The energy companies that co-fire biomass were not involved in the SOMO research. They have therefore instructed Indufor to verify whether there are really any abuses.
This research by Indufor shows that SOMO's conclusions cannot in any way be regarded as violations of the applicable Dutch criteria for sustainable biomass. These criteria are the strictest in the world and have been drawn up in close consultation with environmental organizations, within the joint Biomass Sustainability Agreement. The independent rapporteur under the Agreement (CE Delft) has determined that the co-fired biomass met the sustainability criteria in 2019 and 2020.
