Since 2015, more than 400.000 hectares of tropical forest have been FSC certified in Suriname. To bring supply and demand together, a European FSC trade mission was organized at the end of 2015 with 17 timber importers. People were enthusiastic about what the Surinamese forest and the FSC-certified companies have to offer (see Bosbericht 2015 # 6). Two participants were particularly interested in the wood waste. Together with a number of Surinamese wood processors, we investigated whether this residual wood can be processed into high-quality charcoal. The results are promising and offer an attractive alternative to dumping and/or burning this wood waste, which is often the case now.
